Workshops

With the Sibbesborg sustainable community competition Sipoo is calling for fresh ideas and innovative approaches to land use planning and regional development. In order to succeed, the process will shake up the traditional models of a planning competition: we need a programme for the competition, and the criteria for the planning&design process based on the vision of a sustainable community.

The Aalto University Department of Architecture arranged three workshops for invited professionals from the field of planning&design and sustainable urban development. These workshops focused on developing the Sibbesborg future vision and the new format for a sustainable planning&design competition. In order to reach also international audience, all presentations during the workshops were in English and the key notes were transmitted to the website in English during the debate. Also a fourth workshop was held and was aimed to the residents and other actors in the area.

It is still possible to watch the workshops online.

Workshop 1: Future vision for the Sibbesborg Sustainable Community

Workshop1_019_webThe first workshop focused on developing the vision for the competition area. The workshop discussed what is essential for the future development of Sibbesborg, and the key objectives for planning the community. These objectives will frame the competition programme and the evaluation criteria.

Workshop 2: New format for a planning&design competition for a sustainable community

Workshop2_IMG_5710_webThe second workshop discussed the new requirements that planning of a sustainable town sets on the competition programme, and the evaluation of the entries. This workshop challenged the traditional planning competitions by asking how do we link the sustainability objectives to the competition programme. How, for example, open communication and interaction could become included in a planning competition?

Workshop 3: Sibbesborg Competition for Sustainable Community 2011

Workshop3_018_webIn the third workshop the results of the previous workshops were combined, and the participants began to integrate the future vision of Sibbesborg and the requirements of the competition. The workshop continued the discussion on how do we set the criteria for planning sustainable communities, and above all, called for concrete ideas on organizing and programming the Sibbesborg 2011 competition.
